“ How does a blood moon happen? ”
First of all, the sun appears red during sunrises and sunsets. This is because the atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light, and the more atmosphere sunlight passes through, the redder it gets. At sunrise and sunset, the sun is passing through more of the atmosphere than at noon.
In a lunar eclipse, the earth is between the moon and the sun. In that situation, the earth blocks all direct sunlight. However, the very edges of the earth as viewed from the moon are the locations that are experiencing either sunrise or sunset. So during a lunar eclipse, the moon is illuminated by the simultaneous glow of all the sunrises and sunsets on earth.
